CRAIG JANUS
Occupation: Student/Community Volunteer
Diagnosis: Schizophrenia
People are naturally drawn to Craig Janus, who possesses a natural easy-going smile and almost old-fashioned sense of courtesy. But, behind his gentle, quiet personality exists a fierce drive and a keen intelligence that is equally captivating and endearing.
With a background rich in cultural diversity, Craig’s view of the world was shaped in part by his Irish mother and Polish father. The family traveled extensively and lived in Saudi Arabia, Northern Ireland and Michigan before moving to the Pacific Northwest when he was in eighth grade.
An early interest in sports led him to dream of becoming a racquetball pro, but the training he has been most dedicated to is yoga. The combined disciplines of yoga and philosophy have been driving forces in his life for more than twenty years and help keep him grounded. He works at leading a spiritually balanced life as he merges his Eastern and Western values.
Diagnosed with schizophrenia, the disease surfaced while in high school, possibly triggered by the stresses of school and his internal drive for perfection. He waited two years after developing the disease before seeking traditional medical help, and instead delved further into Jungian Theory and other Eastern principles.
Craig has developed an all-inclusive method of maintaining optimal mental health that includes yoga, exercise, philosophy, medications and therapy at Kitsap Mental Health Services. He is active in his community, donating his time and talents to a non-profit organization that services those in need in his community, and has a group of supportive friends. He has set new goals and focuses his mental energies on his personal studies of philosophy, including the philosophy of art, and the studies of color and Shakespeare. He recently acted in an independent film, and is learning Greek and Latin so he can read the classics in their original form. With a shy smile he admits, “Sometimes I feel like a priest, reading and studying so much.”
