Diagnosed at the age of seven with childhood Schizophrenia, Steven became a test case for the State of California to grant funding for children with a mental illness to attend special schools. He has spent a lifetime dealing with his illness, but has proven to be an ideal candidate for recovery; Steven does not smoke, drink or take recreational drugs and is regimented about taking his medications. He is very disciplined about his physical and mental health and credits his faith for helping him recover.

This self-discipline became apparent early in Steven’s life. At the age of twelve, he taught himself Portuguese, and he later learned Spanish, which led to his attending college in Baja, Mexico and becoming an adult exchange student in a small town near Mexico City.

Through Kitsap Mental Health Services, Steven obtained his first job in many years, giving him confidence and building valuable skills. Recently, he earned his driver's license, began working in the private sector in the food industry and bought a car.

"It is easy to feel alienated and isolated when you have Depression and Schizophrenia," he said. "You feel you are in a mental world of your own; but there is professional assistance and medication that can help." Steven added that he is fortunate to have a strong and supportive family. His mother and brother emphasize that Steven has given more in return than has been given to him. All three agree that the most important thing any one person can give to another is respect. That is the beginning of recovery.
