Inpatient
If a person needs immediate and intensive mental health care, inpatient treatment may be the best place to begin recovery. KMHS operates a 16-bed Adult Inpatient Unit (AIU) designed for short-term stabilization. It is the only adult inpatient unit in Kitsap County and accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions.
The goal of the AIU is to keep a client safe while providing treatment to help the person transition to a less restrictive level of care, such as residential services, supervised housing or outpatient services.
The AIU reserves four beds for clients who need long-term, intensive mental health care. There are also two flex beds that may be used for long-term care as needed.
Eligibility
The AIU accepts clients who meet the following criteria:
- Pose an imminent danger to their own health or safety
- Pose an imminent danger to the health or safety of others
- Have a serious disability. For example, they’re unable to care for themselves because of a mental disorder.
How to Access Services
All clients admitted to the AIU must be referred by a hospital after being medically cleared.

Trained mental health professionals will answer your call and determine the type of support you need. If appropriate, they’ll connect you with a Designated Crisis Responder who can evaluate you for inpatient treatment.
Another option is to go to an emergency department for evaluation and referral.
What to Expect
On average, clients stay one to two weeks in inpatient care while a team works to:
- Stabilize the client
- Evaluate the crisis and any behavioral health issues
- Identify appropriate treatments to help the client move to a less restrictive setting
