Madrona
Madrona Day Treatment program contracts with area school districts to provide educational, behavioral and therapeutic services to learners with complex behavioral and mental health challenges.
The program has been an integral part of KMHS services since the agency began in the 70’s, taking many different forms. Currently it is an approved Non-Public Agency through the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
More than 10 school districts contract with Madrona to reserve seats for students in need of this higher level of support.
The program serves up to 40 learners in four classrooms. Madrona operates one site on the main Almira campus in East Bremerton. The second location is in West Bremerton next to West Hills STEM Academy.
Transitioning students back to their home school is one of our key objectives. The Madrona team works closely with students’ home districts to determine goals and set up transition steps when they are ready to return.
Madrona serves students who:
- Are in 1st through 12th grade
- Are referred by their school district
- Have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
Madrona’s Approach
Madrona’s core values are built around the Circle of Courage, which is also used as a model of positive youth development. Learners are taught about the four components or “spirits” of the Circle of Courage: Belonging, Mastery, Independence, and Generosity. During their time at Madrona, students grow in all four of these areas, developing a more self-secure, pro-social approach to life.
The program provides a wide range of supports – education, individual and group therapy, daily social skills and behavioral coaching. Staff practice positive reinforcement over restraint or isolation.
Care Team
Families and care providers are an integral part of each learner’s therapeutic team, and collaboration is vital for the support of all learners at Madrona.
Students also receive support from special education teachers, school-based therapists, behavior interventionists and paraprofessionals.
Madrona staff are trained in PROACT, CBT+, DBT modalities and motivational interviewing.
